Short answer: the share image is the big picture in a link preview, and it's what most people notice first. It should be 1200 by 630 pixels, and declaring its size in the tags helps it show the first time someone shares the page. Check 197 looks for both.
What Crawl Audit checks
- Pass: an
og:imagetag plusog:image:width. The report shows the declared size. - Warning: an image with no declared width.
- Fail: no og:image.
It reads the declared numbers; it doesn't download the image to measure it.
What the sources say
- Meta: "Use images that are at least 1200 x 630 pixels for the best display on high resolution devices." It suggests staying close to a 1.91:1 ratio to avoid cropping.
- Meta on the width and height tags: they let the crawler "render the image immediately without having to asynchronously download and process it." Otherwise the first person to share may see no image.
- LinkedIn gives 1200 by 627 pixels as its minimum, and shows images under 401 pixels wide as small thumbnails.
- The Open Graph standard: "If the page specifies an og:image it should specify og:image:alt."
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/share.png">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Inventory app showing cartons and loose pieces">
Keep text on the image large and away from the edges, since some apps crop it. If you change it, LinkedIn's Post Inspector refreshes its cached copy.
