Short answer: X (formerly Twitter) reads a tag called twitter:card to decide how a shared link looks. Set it to summary_large_image for the big picture preview. Check 198 warns if the tag is missing.
What Crawl Audit checks
- Pass: a
<meta name="twitter:card">tag, with any value. The report shows it. - Warning: none.
What we could and couldn't confirm
- X's developer pages on cards now redirect to a general overview, and we couldn't find current official documentation of these tags on 6 October 2026.
- The clearest statement left is a 2021 reply from X's developer relations team on its developer forum: "If your goal is to have a large image, you'll need a twitter:card set to summary_large_image - by default the og: fallback for website will be a summary (small image) card."
- So X does fall back to your Open Graph tags (checks 195 to 197), but only for the small preview.
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
To be safe, also set twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image to match your Open Graph tags. Even then, users still report cards not showing on X, so check a test post.
On devmarde.com
Our pages set twitter:card to summary_large_image, with twitter:title and twitter:image too. It passes.
