Short answer: og:description is the line or two of text under the headline in a shared link preview. Check 196 fails when it's missing.

What Crawl Audit checks

  • Pass: a <meta property="og:description"> tag.
  • Fail: none.

It checks the tag exists, not what it says.

What the sources say

  • The Open Graph standard lists it as optional: "A one to two sentence description of your object."
  • LinkedIn is stricter: og:description is one of the tags it says "must exist".
  • Meta: "A brief description of the content, usually between 2 and 4 sentences."
<meta property="og:description" content="Count cartons and loose pieces the way your godown does. Free for 30 days.">

Writing it

  • Say what the reader gets from the page, in plain words.
  • It can be the same as your meta description (check 53).
  • Front-load the point: chat apps often show only the first line.
