Short answer: when every page has the same meta description, it can't describe any of them, so it's no use to Google as a snippet. Check 56 fails when sampled pages share a description, and warns when most of them have none to compare. Google's advice if you can't write one for every page: start with the home page and your most popular pages.
What Crawl Audit checks
- In the full report: Crawl Audit reads the description of the audited page and of up to four other pages it links to, ignoring capital letters.
- Pass: all different.
- Fail: two or more are the same, with the number of duplicates.
- Warning: fewer than two of the sampled pages have a description at all.
- In the free check: only one page is read. Pass if it has a description; warning if not.
What Google says
- Google's snippet guide has a section headed "Create unique descriptions for each page on your site". Under it: "Identical or similar descriptions on every page of a site aren't helpful when individual pages appear in search results."
- "at the very least, create a description for the critical URLs like your home page and popular pages."
- For large sites: "programmatic generation of the descriptions can be appropriate and are encouraged."
Where duplicates come from
- A theme that puts the site's tagline in every page's description.
- An SEO plugin's default description, never replaced.
- Pages duplicated from a template.
How to fix it
- Start with the pages that matter most: the home page, your main service or product pages, and the pages that already get search traffic.
- Write each one about that page alone (check 53 has what a good one says).
- For product or listing pages, build the description from the page's own data, such as name, price and key detail.
