- 55 of 200
- Technical SEO & Indexability
- Meta Tags & Heading Hierarchy
- Medium
Short answer: if several pages share the same title, a searcher can't tell them apart in the results. Check 55 fails when two or more of the pages Crawl Audit samples have the same title. The usual cause is a template that writes one title for every page.
What Crawl Audit checks
- In the full report: Crawl Audit reads the title of the audited page and of up to four other pages it links to. Titles are compared ignoring capital letters. Pass if all are different; fail if any repeat, with the number of duplicates.
- In the free check: only one page is read, so the check passes if that page has a title, and fails if it has none.
What Google says
- "It's important to have distinct text that describes the content of the page in the <title> element for each page on your site."
- "Titling every page on a commerce site "Cheap products for sale", for example, makes it impossible for users to distinguish between two pages."
- Google's list of common title problems also includes "Micro-boilerplate text in <title> elements": the same wording repeated across pages with only a small change.
Where duplicates come from
- A theme or app that sets the site name as every page's title.
- Pages copied from one another, with the title never changed.
- Category, tag and filter pages that all inherit the same title.
How to fix it
- List your titles. A site crawler or the full Crawl Audit report will show repeats.
- Give each page a title that names what's on it: the product, the service and place, or the article's topic.
- For pages built from data, such as products, build the title from the page's own fields, with the brand added once at the end.
Where to edit titles on your platform is in check 51.
