Short answer: Google has no length limit for titles, but it cuts long ones short in search results to fit the screen, and asks for titles that are "descriptive and concise". Check 52 passes titles of 30 to 65 characters and warns outside that range. The range is our own rule of thumb, not a Google number, so treat a warning as a prompt to reread the title, not as an error.
What Crawl Audit checks
- Pass: the title is between 30 and 65 characters long, counted after trimming spaces at each end.
- Warning: it's shorter than 30 or longer than 65. The report shows the title and its length, and suggests aiming for roughly 50 to 60.
- Fail: there's no title to measure (check 51).
What Google says
- "While there's no limit on how long a <title> element can be, the title link is truncated in Google Search results as needed, typically to fit the device width."
- "Write descriptive and concise text for your <title> elements." And: "avoid unnecessarily long or verbose text".
- On stuffing keywords in: it "can make your results look spammy to Google and to users."
- "Brand your titles concisely", with the site name "separated from the rest of the text with a delimiter such as a hyphen, colon, or pipe".
Google can also replace a title it thinks is a poor fit: "If we've detected an issue on the page, we may try to generate an improved title link from anchors, on-page text, or other sources." In 2021 Google said it used the page's own title element "around 87% of the time". It hasn't published a newer figure.
Other tools' numbers
Every tool has its own advice. Shopify's title field takes up to 70 characters. Wix suggests "less than 60 characters". None of these come from Google.

We hold ourselves to the same check. On 3 October our homepage title was 68 characters and our Crawl Audit page 92, so both got this warning. We cut them the same day, to 56 and 60.
How to write a concise title
- Lead with what the page is about, in the words a searcher would use.
- Add your brand once, at the end, after a short separator such as a pipe or colon.
- Cut filler: "Welcome to", "Home page", and repeated keywords.
Where to edit it on your platform is in check 51.
