Short answer: the title tag is the page's name in code, <title>...</title>. Browsers show it on the tab, and Google uses it as the main source for the blue link in search results. Check 51 fails if the page has no title, or an empty one. It's one of the quickest fixes in the whole report.

What Crawl Audit checks

  • Pass: the first <title> on the page has text in it. The report shows the title it found.
  • Fail: there's no <title>, or it's empty.

Its length is check 52, and whether it's unique across your site is check 55.

What Google says

  • "Make sure every page on your site has a title specified in the <title> element."
  • Google builds the title link in search results from several sources. The first one it lists is "Content in <title> elements", followed by the main visible title, headings such as the H1, and others.
  • Google's SEO starter guide: "a good title is unique to the page, clear and concise, and accurately describes the contents of the page."

Without a title, Google has to make one up from the page, and the browser tab shows the bare address.

On your platform

  • WordPress: your theme writes the title from the post or page title. With Yoast, click "Search appearance" in the Yoast SEO sidebar to edit it. With Rank Math, click "Edit Snippet" in its General tab.
  • Shopify: on a page, go to the "Search engine listing preview" section and click "Edit website SEO". Shopify lets you enter up to 70 characters.
  • Wix: in the page's SEO settings, open "SEO basics" and enter the title tag.
  • Squarespace: page settings, SEO tab. Squarespace notes the SEO title is "Not available for homepages".
  • Next.js: set title in metadata or generateMetadata. A title.template such as '%s | Acme' in the root layout adds your brand to every page.
