Short answer: sameAs is a list of links, inside your Organization markup, to other pages that are definitely you: your LinkedIn company page, your Instagram, your company registry entry. It's how machines connect your website to the rest of your footprint. Crawl Audit check 26 passes when your Organization markup has at least one sameAs link.

What Crawl Audit checks

  • Pass: the first Organization-type node on the page has a sameAs property with at least one link.
  • Warning: it doesn't. The message differs depending on whether the page links to social profiles in its HTML. If it does, the fix is just to copy those links into the markup.

What Google says

Google's Organization documentation describes sameAs as "The URL of a page on another website with additional information about your organization, if applicable. For example, a URL to your organization's profile page on a social media or review site. You can provide multiple sameAs URLs."

schema.org's definition is stricter, and it's the one to follow: a "URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity". "Unambiguously" is the important word.

  • Your company pages on the networks you actually use.
  • An official registry entry, if you have one. For a UK company, that's its Companies House page.
  • A Wikidata item, if one exists and meets Wikidata's rules (check 27 covers this).

Ours, for example, lists six: LinkedIn, X, Instagram, TikTok, our Companies House record and our Wikidata item. We only add a profile once we've confirmed it's ours.

Never list a profile you don't control

This is the mistake that actually hurts. If someone else owns the handle that matches your brand, linking it tells every machine that you and they are the same entity. It happened to us: an unrelated personal Instagram account uses the handle that matches our name, so our markup links our real account, @hey.devmarde, and never the other one.

How to add it on your platform

  • WordPress with Yoast SEO: add your social profiles under Yoast SEO › Settings › Site representation. They go into the Organization markup.
  • Shopify: the Dawn theme builds sameAs from the social media links in your theme settings.
  • Wix and Squarespace: fill in your social links in site settings. Where the platform allows custom markup, check the result in Google's Rich Results Test.
  • Next.js: keep the list in one data file and use it for both the footer icons and the markup.

Common mistakes

  • Personal profiles in the company's sameAs. A founder's LinkedIn belongs on their Person node, not the Organization's.
  • Dead or old profiles you no longer use.
  • Links to a search result or a hashtag page instead of a profile.
