Short answer: check 22 passes when a page has at least three list items, using the HTML list elements <ul> or <ol>. Because it counts lists anywhere on the page, including the navigation menu, almost every site passes. The idea behind it is still worth acting on: when your content has several separate points, a real list makes each one easy to scan and easy to quote on its own.
What Crawl Audit checks
Crawl Audit counts every <li> inside a <ul> or <ol> on the whole page.
- Pass: three or more.
- Warning: fewer than three.
Most site menus are lists, so a pass here doesn't mean your content uses lists. If you want to know, look at the main text of your key pages yourself.
Lists in HTML
From MDN: <ul> "represents an unordered list of items, typically rendered as a bulleted list", <ol> "represents an ordered list of items", and <li> "is used to represent an item in a list." Use <ol> when the order matters, for steps or a ranking, and <ul> when it doesn't.
We didn't find any Google statement that lists help rankings or snippets, so we won't claim that. They help readers, and anything that has to pull separate points out of a page.
Where lists help, and where they don't
- Help: what's included in a plan, requirements, features, steps, the documents a customer needs to bring.
- Help: one complete idea per item. "Works on Android 8 and later" stands alone; "And more" doesn't.
- Don't: an argument or a story. Those read better as paragraphs.
- Don't: lists made by typing dashes or dots at the start of lines. They look like lists but aren't, so nothing reading the HTML sees them.
How to add real lists on your platform
- WordPress: the List block (type
/list) makes a bulleted or numbered list. - Shopify, Wix and Squarespace: use the bullet or numbered-list button in the text editor, not typed symbols.
- Next.js:
<ul>or<ol>with<li>items.
