Short answer: First Contentful Paint (FCP) is the moment the first text or image appears, so the visitor knows the page is coming. It isn't a Core Web Vital, but it comes before LCP (check 72), so a slow FCP drags LCP with it. Check 75 passes at 1.8 seconds or less, warns up to 3 seconds and fails above that.

What Crawl Audit checks

  • Full report: real-user FCP from the Chrome UX Report when available, otherwise Lighthouse's lab figure.
  • Free check: an estimate from your server response time and how long the homepage took to load. A rough guide only.
  • Pass: 1.8s or less. Warning: up to 3s. Fail: over 3s.

What Google says

  • web.dev: "First Contentful Paint (FCP) measures the time from when the user first navigated to the page to when any part of the page's content is rendered on the screen."
  • "Good FCP values are 1.8 seconds or less. Poor values are greater than 3.0 seconds"

On devmarde.com

On 3 October, PageSpeed Insights measured our homepage FCP at 1.1 seconds on mobile (lab test, Lighthouse 13.5).

What holds it back

  • A slow server response (check 71). Nothing can appear before the first byte arrives.
  • Stylesheets and scripts that block rendering (checks 86 and 87).
  • Web fonts that hide text until they load (checks 97 and 98).
