Short answer: a real address in the footer shows you're a business someone can find. For UK companies it's also the law: the website must show the registered office address, company number and where it's registered. Check 127 warns when it can't find an address in the footer.
What Crawl Audit checks
- Pass: the footer has an
<address>element, text that looks like a street address (a number followed by a word such as Street, Road, Avenue, Lane, Drive, Way, Close, Place, Court, Crescent, Suite or Floor), or a UK postcode. - Warning: neither.
It's still a text pattern, so unusual addresses or a PO box may not match. Until 6 October 2026 it also matched unrelated text: our own footer passed because "Est. 2022" matched the "st." rule. That's now fixed, and our footer passes on "Drive" and our postcode. Wrapping the address in <address> is the most reliable way to pass.
What the rules say (UK)
- The Company, Limited Liability Partnership and Business (Names and Trading Disclosures) Regulations 2015: "Every company shall disclose its registered name on its websites."
- Regulation 25: it must also show "(a) the part of the United Kingdom in which the company is registered; (b) the company's registered number; (c) the address of the company's registered office".
- The E-commerce Regulations 2002: "the geographic address at which the service provider is established", in a form that's "easily, directly and permanently accessible".
On devmarde.com
Our footer reads: "DevMarDe is a trading name of Designn Space Ltd, registered in England and Wales, company no. 14258316. Registered office: 61 Hangleton Drive, Birmingham, B11 2QD."
Doing it properly
- Put the address in the footer, so it's on every page.
- Use the same name and address everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile and directories (check 25).
- Add it to your Organization or LocalBusiness markup too (checks 7 and 13).
This is a summary, not legal advice.
