Short answer: before people buy, they want to know who they're dealing with. An about or team page answers that, and Google's quality raters are told to look for it. Check 125 warns when the page doesn't link to an about, team or founder page.

What Crawl Audit checks

  • Pass: a link whose address contains "about", "team" or "founder".
  • Warning: none.

It checks for the link, not the page's contents. A page at /about-us with two lines of text passes.

What Google says

  • Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines: "Most websites have "contact us" or "about us" or "about" pages that provide information about who owns the site."
  • For pages that need a high level of trust, raters should give a Low rating "if there is an unsatisfying amount of information about who is responsible for the website or who created the content."
  • Google's helpful content guide asks: "Is it self-evident to your visitors who authored your content?" And warns that "Fabricating creator profiles (such as by using AI-generated headshots, made-up names, or false credentials ...) is a form of deception."

What makes an about page believable

  • Real names, roles and photos of the people behind the business.
  • Facts anyone can check: the registered company name and number, when it started, where it's based (checks 126 and 127).
  • Links to the people's own profiles, and to work they've done.
  • No invented team members, stock photos presented as staff, or awards you can't show.
