Short answer: price is usually the first thing people want to know, and when it's hidden many go to a competitor who shows it. Check 116 is informational and always passes: it notes whether the page mentions prices or plans, because pricing may live on its own page.
What Crawl Audit checks
- Pass: a price in dollars, pounds or euros, or the word "pricing" or "plans".
- Pass: none, with a note that pricing may be on a dedicated page.
Prices in rupees, dirhams and other currencies aren't recognised (see check 21).
What the research says
Nielsen Norman Group found price is people's top information need on any website, including business-to-business ones, which often hide it.
- "In our studies, we watch participants go to competitors' sites when websites do not show prices."
- "When showing exact costs is unrealistic, help users by showing prices for typical scenarios, price range, or manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP)."
Showing prices that vary
- "From" prices, such as "Kitchens fitted from £4,000".
- A range, or two or three typical examples.
- What the price depends on, and how to get an exact quote.
- Write the price as text, with the currency, so people and machines can read it (check 21).
