Short answer: on a phone, a number wrapped in a tel: link starts a call with one tap. A plain number has to be copied and pasted. Check 110 warns when your page shows what looks like a phone number but has no tel: link.
What Crawl Audit checks
- Pass: a link starting with
tel:. - Warning: no
tel:link, but a phone-like number (nine or more digits, spaces or brackets) in the page text. - Pass: no phone number at all.
The number pattern is loose. Long reference numbers or dates can look like phone numbers to it.
What MDN says
- Links can point to "Telephone numbers with tel: URLs".
- "tel: link behavior varies with device capabilities": "Cellular devices autodial the number", while laptops may offer a calling app.
<a href="tel:+923060720072">+92 306 072 0072</a>
Getting it right
- Put the full international number in the link: a plus sign, the country code, then the number without the leading zero or spaces.
- Show the number in the visible text too. Some people want to read it or save it.
- For a WhatsApp number, a
https://wa.me/link works the same way.
On devmarde.com
Our number, +92 306 072 0072, is a tap-to-call link, so this passes.
